Selecting Your Topics (HW 5.1)

1. Read Ch. 5 on Selecting Your Topic and Analyzing Your Audience. 2. View the DO NOT DO Topic List on Blackboard so you know what topics NOT to choose. 3. Pick 3 things that you are really passionate about/and that “move your heart” and form them into topics (make sure these are topics that research can be found on). NOTE: If you find this difficult, use the brainstorming strategy on page 70-71 and #3 on the Personal Activities on pg. 83 and go from there. 4. Once you have chosen your 3 topics, determine your speaking purpose and specific purpose (pg.73) for each. 5. Tell me about the potential audience interest (why the audience should care about this topic) see pg. 77. Make sure you read the story on pg. 76 first. 6. Create 3 possible main points for each topic.

Example:
Topic: Reasons you should try online dating.
Speaking Purpose: To Persuade
Specific Purpose: To convince the audience that there are many benefits to trying online dating.
Audience Interest: The audience will benefit from this speech because they could potentially find their future partner or help someone else find theirs’.
Pt. 1: Online dating expands your options.
Pt. 2: Increases self esteem
Pt. 3: Fear of rejection is reduced since there are so many potentials.
