STEP 1:
Select only ONE question from the four options detailed below in order to research and write your Annotated
Reference List:
Q1. Discuss biological or psychological positivism’s influence on contemporary criminal justice policy and practice
by using contemporary examples.
Q2. Analyse the most significant contributions to criminology from the Chicago School. Explain and justify your
choices by highlighting the current relevance of the contribution to contemporary criminological thought.
Q3. With examples, discuss Downes and Rock (2011: 136) proposition that “Structure and culture make
incompatible demands and it is at these points of pressure that subcultures have evolved to ‘solve’ the problems
that arise.”
Q.4. Choose ONE of the issues listed below and analyse contemporary discussions of your chosen issue using the
labelling perspective as the analytic frame.
• Terrorism and terrorist OR
• Immigration and asylum seekers
STEP 2:
Once you have selected your question, identify two different sources that could be used to answer your chosen
essay question. These two sources will include:
• One peerreviewed journal article (Scholarly) and either
• One newspaper article (Nonscholarly) or
• One government website (Scholarly) or
• One book chapter (Scholarly)
Based on the above, one of your two sources MUST be a peerreviewed journal article.
STEP 3:
Having identified your two sources, you are to summarise each source and use the source to construct an
argument to address the essay question (application). In constructing your argument you may focus on key
sections/arguments and or evidence found within the source that can help answer your essay question.
