Writing an Article Review
• Find an article Must be a professional, peer reviewed article on psychology topic
o Do not use:
 Do not use newspapers, Wikipedia or any other Encyclopedias.
o Article should not be more than five years old. 2011-2016
o Summarize Write a summary of what you learned. The last paragraph is your personal view of the article. Summary should include: who conducted the study, what was studied, where did the study take place and why did they do the study (purpose)
• Paper Format – See sample on last page of this handout. See rubric for grading.
o Must be saved as .doc, .docx, or .rtf Apple Pages file will not be accepted.
o Name block in the upper left corner of page with these four lines:
 Your name
 Course Number and section
 Date
 Assignment Name (Citation, Journal Review, Counselor Paper)
o Title Create a simple title and put one line below name block. Centered on page
o Citation. When writing the article review, the first paragraph is the citation.
 The citation includes title of article, author, and publication title should be in italics, year of article, volume and page numbers where the article can be found.
o How long is the paper? Minimum of 400 words, it can be longer. MS Word gives you a word count at the bottom of the page.
o Double spaced. The entire paper should be double spaced.
o Margins 1” on all sides
o Font size 12pt (Times New Roman, Arial or New Courier fonts). Use all the same font throughout the whole paper, so if you cut and paste something change the font.
• Reflect. The last paragraph(s) are your own thoughts and comments about the article.
o Did you agree or disagree with the findings, did you understand the methodology, did the article have special meaning to you for some reason?
